Architects Fletcher Rae chosen for Northwich’s Weaver Square masterplan

Manchester-based architecture firm Fletcher Rae has been chosen to create a new vision and masterplan for Northwich’s Weaver Square Shopping Centre area.

A key local regeneration area, the Weaver Square proposals could boost the £129m in investment already secured for the Cheshire town.

The masterplan site encompasses the Weaver Square Shopping Centre, the information centre, Victoria Club Car Park, the bus and police stations and both the indoor and outdoor markets.

Those behind the scheme are now exploring the possibility of including a public services hub within the plan, potentially improving service delivery across Northwich.

Stage one is an optioning consultation, launched this week, with the public invited to share their views on the shopping centre and the role it plays within the town.

This will include workshops with local groups, as well as a survey viewed via the dedicated Weaver Square Masterplan page on Facebook.

Cheshire West and Chester’s Cabinet Member for Economic Development and Infrastructure, Cllr Brian Clarke, said: “This is a real blank sheet of paper and in this early phase we’re looking for the views of local people on what will create vitality around Weaver Square.

“The town currently loses a lot of spend to bigger locations but Weaver Square, along with the new Barons Quay development, provides us with a unique opportunity to really boost Northwich and draw people in.”

He added: “We’re open to all suggestions and would encourage everyone to get involved and have their say.”

PSP Cheshire West and Cheshire LLP – a partnership between the council and Public Sector PLC, which offers local authorities funding in connection with their property portfolios – is managing the master planning process for Cheshire West and Chester Council.
