£2.6m container-handling fleet arrives at Port of Liverpool
A fleet of new tractors and trailers has arrived at the Port of Liverpool, providing a multi-million pound container-handling boost for two of the facility’s terminals.
The YT222 tractors and Seacom 70-tonne trailers, which will service the Royal Seaforth Container Terminal and the Liverpool2 (L2) development, represent an investment of over £2.6m and will complement the new semi-automated CRMG cranes commissioned for L2.
Provided by environmental equipment firm Terberg and its partner Briggs Equipment, the vehicles will focus on integrated operations between the two Port of Liverpool terminals throughout the phased launch of L2.
Elsewhere, a training programme has been put in place to offer additional opportunities for straddle-carrier drivers and new recruits.
The Port of Liverpool is expected take a further 15 tractors and trailers as throughput at L2 grows.
Colin Darroch, head of container operations, said: “It’s very important that we maximise efficiency throughout the port and its two terminals.
“After looking across the market we decided on Terberg’s vehicles as meeting our exacting performance and reliability specifications for the job as well as being cost-effective.”
He added: “We will also be introducing segregated lanes for the tractors and hauliers to further improve traffic flows.”
Terberg’s head of sales for the UK and Ireland, Richard Woodings, commented: “Having worked with Peel Ports for 20 years we are delighted that they have chosen to continue using our vehicles as they enter this new chapter.”
The arrival of the fleet follows news that Luciana Berger MP has confirmed plans to unlock the facility’s potential and bolster the economy of the city region should she become Liverpool’s new Metro Mayor.
