£25m University of Hull medical facility undergoes topping out ceremony

The Allam Medical Building, the centrepiece of a new £28m Health Campus at the University of Hull, reached a major milestone on Wednesday (September 21st).

Honorary Graduate and major donor to the University, Dr Assem Allam, carried out a topping out ceremony at the scheme to mark its progression.

The £25m, five-storey building, built in-part with a £7m donation from Hull City owner Assem Allam, will officially be opened in late 2017.

The building will be home to Hull York Medical School (HYMS) and the University’s Faculty of Health and Social Care which between them deliver medical, nursing, midwifery and allied health professional training and carry out research in health and social care.

The facilities will offer students teaching and training in ‘real-life’ settings to help enhance their skills and employability.

It will provide specialised teaching facilities including a full mock hospital ward, operating theatre and intensive care nursing facilities, and will see medical students working alongside, nursing, midwifery and allied health undergraduates, as well as PhD students, advanced nurse practitioners and physician associates.

Last year, 98% of the University’s nursing, midwifery and allied health graduates were in work or further study six months after graduating, with some specialisms reaching 100%.

Dr Assem Allam said: ’’This building, and more importantly what this building will make possible, is close to my heart.

“The work that will be done here will change people’s lives. It will nurture the next generation of doctors, nurses, midwives, clinical biomedical scientists and many other key health professionals.

“Each one of these people will go out into the community locally, nationally and internationally to ease suffering and pain, to care for the ill, to provide dignity for the dying, and to help people become fitter and healthier.

“The research and training that will take place within the building will provide a focus for collaboration on world-leading and internationally excellent research, which will make an impact on the health and wellbeing of the local population and of many other people around the world.

“It is my hope that the Allam Medical Building and the Health Campus will become a global beacon of excellence.”

The majority of general adult nurses and mental health nurses graduating from the University in July 2015 secured jobs in the region, providing a boost for Hull and East Yorkshire health services.
