Have your smart meter installed by 2020

It is now time for you to be in control of your energy usage! Do you really know how much gas and electricity you are really using? Smart meters do just that.

The readings from your smart meter will be automatically sent out to your supplier, this is known as Automated Meter Reading (AMR), showing you exactly how much you are spending, and what on. This also means an engineer will no longer have to come out to your home and take a meter reading, again making it more convenient for you.

They are now available to everyone and will be offered to every home in Britain by 2020. Depending on your suppliers current progress and ability, will determine when you will have yours installed into your household.

Whether you are a homeowner, renting a home or living in social living you are all eligible for a smart meter. Very few people are aware just how much energy they are using and how much it is costing them, which is why having a smart meter installed into your home will be beneficial.

Some more good news; you can still switch supplier if you have a smart meter, however some suppliers may not be equipped to deal with the particular model of smart meter you currently have installed from the previous supplier. Therefore, a standard meter would be put back in place until your new provider introduces smart meters to their customers.

It is always a good idea to speak to your new energy provider before you commit to switching in case of any complications in changing your smart meter. In some cases, your previous provider may use the same model of smart meter as your new provider. You can then simply transfer the functionality of it over and carrying on using the same meter, it will then work just like it did previously, and send over your energy usage to the new provider.
