Seddon recruits new wave of apprentices

Builder and developer Seddon has recruited eight new trainees, after receiving more than 600 applications for its award-winning apprenticeship programme.

This year’s training scheme will see three painter and decorators, one electrical engineer, two mechanical services and two professional services apprentices gain experience both on site and in the classroom.

The successful applicants this year range from 16 to 30 years old, with one applicant, Dominic McLaughlin, 19, the second to join through the Sector Based Work Academy in partnership with Salford College and Bolton Job Centre.

Trainees began the programme on 12th September, starting with a two-week induction, which included health and safety demonstrations and a community event where the group helped to repaint a local Scouts building in Clayton, Manchester.

The Seddon Level 2 apprenticeship entails two years of study, with some trainees continuing with the company on a three and half year course - something unique in the industry.

Seddon’s well-established apprenticeship offering forms part of its resilient workforce approach, allowing stability in the face of skills shortages and economic uncertainty.

Kat Healey, training and apprentice co-ordinator at Seddon, said: “It’s vital that we continue to train apprentices not only for ourselves, but for the industry too. Without new staff developing valuable skills and coming through the ranks, the industry would soon come to a halt.”

The builder, which has headquarters in Bolton, also recently picked up the Best Company for Apprentice Development accolade at the Bolton & Bury Business Awards.
