Sainsbury's rolls out its one-hour delivery service to over 35,000 postcodes

UK grocer Sainsbury’s has announced it is to significantly extend the reach of its one-hour delivery service in London from Wednesday.

The retailer’s Chop Chop app, which is currently being trialled exclusively in Wandsworth, will be rolled out to over 35,000 more London postcodes this week.

Based out of its Wandsworth and Pimlico stores, the app allows users to order up to 20 items via the iOS app which will then be delivered via bicycle within the hour for a flat rate fee of £4.99.

Sainsbury’s said the service, which is still technically at the trial stage, is part of the supermarket’s strategy to give their customers more options when shopping with the retailer.

Jon Rudoe, Sainsbury’s Director of Digital and Technology said: “In Wandsworth customers are using the new one hour delivery service to buy forgotten items, or emergency goods when they cannot leave their home, or have invited guests on the spur of the moment.

“If it proves popular we might introduce it to other areas of London. It complements our same day delivery service which is available at selected London postcodes through our online groceries service.”

To support the new delivery service, Sainsbury’s has recruited 40 extra staff at the two stores, with new pickers shopping for a customer’s items and its new team of cyclists delivering goods within the selected postcodes.

It also means that the capital will have yet another on-demand delivery service thronging its cycle lanes, as orange jacketed Chop Chop couriers vie with the respective rider armies at Deliveroo, UberEATS and the recently launched Amazon Restaurants.
