Stagecoach driver crowned UK's greenest driver

A Stagecoach Merseyside and South Lancashire bus driver has beaten thousands to be named the UK’s most eco-friendly driver, the second time he has scooped the award.

Dave Birch who was named the most eco-friendly driver in the UK in 2015, was awarded the title for his commitment to driving in a sustainable way.

Dave beat 18,000 drivers from companies across the country to win the award and was praised for his efforts at a special ceremony in Liverpool.

Dave has worked in the bus industry for over 23 years and for the last two years, his eco-friendly driving has been measured by a GreenRoad device, which monitors driving manoeuvres and level of fuel efficiency.

The device is fitted into all Stagecoach buses and gives drivers second by second feedback on their performance, using a traffic-light LED system located on the dashboard.

The 63-year-old, who is based at Stagecoach’s Birkenhead depot, said: “It’s fantastic to have been named the UK’s most eco-friendly driver for the second year in a row. Travelling by bus is generally a more sustainable option however it’s important that all drivers play their part by driving in the greenest way possible.

“Stagecoach is continuously coming up with new ideas to help reduce carbon emissions and I’m proud to have done my bit to help that cause.”

The installation of the GreenRoad system is part of Stagecoach’s wider goal to create a greener and safer transport option for passengers.
