£24m of Government investmemt announced as Yorkshire wins bid to host 2019 UCI Road World Championships

Yorkshire has won the bid to host the 2019 UCI Road World Cycling Championships, which is returning to Britain for the first time in 37 years.

The joint bid was put forward by Welcome to Yorkshire, British Cycling, UK Sport and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport.

As part of the the successful bid, £24m of Government investment will be injected into the sporting event as well as an additional £3m of National Lottery funding from UK Sport.

The government will invest £15m of the budget to help develop 27 cycle sport facilities across the UK, with an aim of leaving a lasting legacy at grassroots level.

Sports Minister Tracey Crouch said: “ I am delighted that our bid to host the UCI Road World Championships in 2019 has been successful.

“The government is backing the event with investment to stage the Championships and leave a legacy that will help strengthen cycling at the grassroots across the country.

“As a nation we have a great history in staging some of the biggest events in sport and I look forward to working alongside Welcome to Yorkshire, British Cycling and UK Sport on these Championships.

“Yorkshire has embraced major cycling events in recent years and I know the county will put on a fantastic show in 2019.”

UCI President Brian Cookson OBE added: “Since hosting the Tour de France’s Grand Départ in 2014 and subsequent Tours de Yorkshire, the county has proved it is a fitting host for road cycling’s leading annual event and we are sure there will be world class crowds to match.”

Sir Gary Verity, Chief Executive of Welcome to Yorkshire also commented: “Today marks a moment in history. Yorkshire has shown it can host world-class events with the Grand Départ and Tours de Yorkshire, and now the county has been chosen to host the nine-day UCI Road World Championships in 2019.”
