Another airport has broken a passenger records as South East air travel booms

London Luton Airport (LLA) has announced it has broken through the 14m passenger mark for the first time as air travel in the South East continues to swell.

The airport, which is currently undergoing an extensive £110m redevelopment programme, said that the rolling total of passengers who have used the airport surpassed the 14m milestone in September, meaning the transport hub has already exceed its 2015 total of 12.3m passengers.

Additionally, the airport said that passenger numbers in September alone, which saw 1.4m people opt to fly from LLA, was a record month for the airport on the back of 30 consecutive months of growth.

Nick Barton, Chief Executive of LLA, commented: “Reaching this huge milestone is a fantastic endorsement from our passengers as they continue to choose to fly with us. Demand for air travel at LLA is at an all-time high which is an indicator of the timely nature of our transformation project.

“We’re working hard to deliver our £110million redevelopment and create an airport that exceeds our passengers’ expectations.”

The figures follow similarly impressive numbers from both Gatwick and Heathrow earlier this week who both posted significant growth in passenger numbers and cargo volumes.

The government is due to make a decision imminently on whether to greenlight expansion at either Gatwick and Heathrow, with spiralling passenger volumes underlining the urgency required in order to support the continued growth in the region’s aviation sector.
