Plans submitted for 209-bedroom student development in Leeds

A planning application has been submitted for a 209-bedroom student accommodation scheme close to Leeds city centre and just a short walk from both the University of Leeds and Leeds Beckett University.

S Harrison submitted plans for the development which would replace a predominantly vacant, existing office building on Blenheim Walk, located between Leeds College of Art and Leeds Student Medical Practice.

The scheme’s 209 en-suite bedrooms would be spread across 32 cluster apartments that will all benefit from large, shared kitchen, living and dining spaces to promote inclusivity.

The development would also offer a range of communal facilities including a reception area, study rooms, games area and common room. Externally there is a large, green courtyard area, and cycle parking.

Gavin Douglas, design manager from S Harrison, said: “This scheme has been carefully designed to create a high quality development which reflects its location, and the heritage that surrounds it.

“It will significantly improve the environmental quality of the local area, create new active frontages and improve the public realm on a key gateway into the city centre from North Leeds.

“In recent years there has been a major shift in students moving towards the city centre from Leeds’s traditional student areas, such as Headingley, and this development would be ideally placed to capitalise on this trend.

“It’s within a short walk of Leeds city centre and both the city’s universities, so there’s no doubt it would be a popular place to live and help to free up housing stock in the surrounding area.”

If the planning application is approved, work could start early next year and complete in time for the start of the 2018/19 academic year.
