Work begins on final phase of Leeds City College's £10m Printworks Campus revamp

Construction work is now underway on the final phase of a £10m development at Leeds City College’s Printworks Campus.

This phase of the renovation will turn the historic Printhall into a new learning space which will house the School of Technology and the commercial services that the college offers, including the restaurant and hair salon.

Situated on the South Bank development, the building will house over 1300 students.

Representatives of the Leeds City Region Enterprise Partnership, a Council official and members of the Executive Leadership Team at Leeds City College marked the start of construction work on the Printhall with ground-breaking ceremony.

Among the guests was Leader of Leeds City Council, Cllr Judith Blake who sits on both the Leeds City Region Enterprise Partnership Board and the West Yorkshire Combined Authority Board, which are providing Growth Deal grant funding towards the project.

Stephanie Burras, founder and chief executive of Ahead Partnership was also present on the day.

She said: “The LEP is supporting this investment with almost £9 million investment through the Leeds City Region Enterprise Partnership (LEP) Growth Deal – a £1 billion package of government investment to accelerate growth and create jobs across Leeds City Region.

“This is helping to preserve an important grade II listed building in the heart of the City and develop an innovative learning environment for the next generation of entrepreneurs in the technological, engineering and manufacturing sectors.”

John Gittins, divisional director at Interserve, the contractors of the project, added: “Interserve is delighted to have been appointed for the final phase of the Printworks Campus as part of Leeds City College’s continued investment in its facilities.

“We have a strong pedigree within both the further education and heritage sectors; and we are really looking forward to working with the college and conservation team on one of the most recognisable listed landmark buildings in Leeds.”

The final phase of the Printhall will be completed in 2017, before the next academic year starts.
