Google Decided to Kill SMS

Google launches messaging service on Android-devices based on Rich Communications Services (RCS) technology. 58 operators, providing network to the 4.7 billion subscribers around the world have pledged to support RCS as a single implementation standard.

Google explained its decision by telling that they work on the implementation of RCS during 2016. The customers of the American telecommunications company Sprint will be the first to experience new technology. Next year all new Android-devices using the Sprint network operator will be equipped by Google Messenger based on the RCS technology. Users benefit from the get enhanced messaging features, including group chat, high-resolution photo sharing and message read and delivery status. The service will run on the Jibe RCS cloud by Google.

RCS is the part of the new Advanced Messaging standard, which should improve the functionality of messaging by default. RCS transmits multimedia messages up to 10 MB, allows creating group chats and video calls. By analogy with most instant messengers, RCS indicates whether the message was read or the text typed.

In late September, it was reported that Google is working on App Preview Messaging service, which enables users to reply to messages without using the messenger that sent it. Now Allo service by Google is equipped with this feature.
