Lidl to create 500 jobs with a new £70m warehouse in Doncaster

German budget food retailer Lidl has unveiled plans to build a £70m distribution centre at iPort Doncaster.

Verdion’s £500m logistics development, located on the outskirts of Doncaster, is set to house a new 628,000 sq ft warehouse which will create up to 500 new jobs.

Lidl has now submitted a planning application for the distribution facility and construction work is expected to commence sometime next year.

This move is part of Lidl’s ongoing expansion across the UK, which includes the opening of a new regional distribution centre in Southampton earlier this month.

Earlier this year it was also announced that Amazon will be building a brand new facility at iPort. Due to open in summer 2017, Amazon will also bring 500 new jobs to the area.

Adrienne Howells, Lidl UK’s head of warehouse expansion, said: “With more British customers choosing Lidl as their family supermarket we are laser focused on the sustainable growth of our business.

“We are, therefore, thrilled to be in a position to confirm our 13th distribution centre in Great Britain, bringing investment to Doncaster, new jobs and additional support to our existing and future stores in the north of England.”

Michael Hughes, CEO of Verdion, commented: “We are delighted to announce this significant signing to another well-known name at iPort. Lidl is a strong operator with great confidence in the region, bringing with it many new job opportunities for Doncaster and the surrounding areas.”

Gent Visick, CBRE and Cushman & Wakefield are letting agents for iPort.

Colliers International acted for Lidl.
