Stockport-based Rowlinson secures planning consent for 258-home Moss Side scheme

Building firm Rowlinson Constructions has secured planning consent for a residential scheme in Moss Side, Manchester.

Designed by Buttress Architects, the plans comprise 54 two- and three-storey family homes fronting Princess Road along with 204 one- to three-bedroom apartments.

Of the 204 apartments, 72 will serve as retirement accommodation.

The six-acre site will be landscaped to improve the area’s bio-diversity, with private gardens and tree-lined streets running throughout the development. The retirement living element will have access to a communal garden.

David Chilton, director of development at Stockport-based Rowlinson Constructions, said: “Gaining planning permission for this development is an important milestone in the ongoing strategy for Moss Side.

“We look forward to starting on site to bring high-quality market housing and apartments to an area that is undergoing an exciting renaissance.”

Ian Beaumont, director at Buttress added: “This is a new and distinctive place, that has been thoughtfully designed to sit seamlessly and comfortably with surrounding homes.”

He added: “Five years ago, we completed the transformation of the adjacent Bowes Street and with planning permission now granted, this neighbourhood is set to be joined by new residents and a scheme that will continue to diversify the range of homes in the area.”

The plot was home to bus operator Stagecoach for more than 100 years, but the company relocated in 2011 and the site has since lain vacant.

Rowlinsons was the successful bidder for the scheme when it was brought to market by Manchester Place, a partnership between Manchester City Council and the Homes and Communities Agency.

Paul Beardmore, chief exec of Manchester Place, commented: “Delivering high quality new housing is a priority for the city and Manchester Place is working with developers and investors to drive that delivery.

“This is an important site and we look forward to the development starting and seeing high quality homes for people to buy and rent in a great residential community area of the city.”

Construction work is set to commence in Spring 2017.
