Former Tyrers dept store in St Helens set for £1m makeover
Merseyside’s Luxor Group has acquired the former home of department store Tyrers in St Helens.
The developer’s seven-figure plans for the five-storey Bridge Street property outline the creation of a sustainable scheme comprising residential and retail space.
Luxor will invest more than £1m to breath new life into the building with a full renovation.
The façade and exterior features will be retained, but the developer intends to revamp the site’s rear and add decorative outdoor lighting.
The 15,000 sq ft building’s upper floors will be converted into a mix of one- and two-bedroom apartments, while the existing retail space on the ground and basement levels will be retained.
Luxor confirmed it is already looking into potential retailers that could strengthen the town centre’s shopping offer.
Luxor Group’s managing director, Paul Nicholson, said: “We are proud to have an opportunity to save such an iconic building with so much heritage.
“Tyrers was an institution to the people of Merseyside and we are excited to bring the building back to life by creating functional living space and attracting a Grade-A tenant for the retail space.”
He continued: “There was a real danger that the building could have laid empty for years to come. We are now starting to consider potential retail tenants to approach that would add value to the residents of St Helens.”
Luxor Group saw its beginnings as a developer set up to acquire and overhaul derelict buildings on the outskirts of Liverpool city centre. Today, the firm boasts a portfolio of more than 155 rental units and is looking to expand beyond its Liverpool heartland.
Speaking further, Paul commented: “Since we started investing in the Kensington area of Liverpool we have seen a substantial regeneration which has been great for the local community and residents. With the support of St Helens Council we see a similar opportunity here in St Helens.
“We are constantly seeking opportunities to acquire beautiful old forgotten buildings to convert into affordable luxury homes.”
