Hospice receives housebuilder boost

A hospice which supports people facing life-limiting illnesses and their families across Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire has received a grant from one of the UK’s leading housebuilders.

The Sue Ryder Nettlebed Hospice has been handed a donation of £1,000 as a part of Persimmon Homes North London’s Community Champions initiative, a scheme that sees a pot of £24,000 donated to local groups and charities annually.

The Nettlebed Hospice, based in Henley-on-Thames in Oxfordshire, will use the money to provide bereavement counselling sessions for people struggling to cope with the loss of a loved one.

Ben Smart, from Sue Ryder, said: “We have been providing care to patients who are suffering from conditions such as cancer, heart failure and lung disease since 1979.

“A big part of our remit is also to support the families of the patients and Persimmon’s generous donation will allow us to hold bereavement counselling sessions for 20 families.

“Our expert family support teams provide transformational and dedicated help to the entire family unit. We know we can’t change the outcome but we can change the journey for our patients and their families.”

Sue Ryder’s Nettlebed Hospice offers a range of support from inpatient care in the 12-bed hospice to a seven day community nursing service, which helps people stay at home and provides respite to carers.

The Community Champions initiative invites local groups and charities to bid for cash from a £750,000 national fund, with two donations of up to £1,000 being made in the region each month.

Greg Kaye, sales director at Persimmon Homes North London, said: “The Sue Ryder Hospice does outstanding work providing support to those suffering from serious illnesses and their families and we are delighted to support their efforts.

“If applicants were unsuccessful last month, we urge them to visit the Persimmon Homes website and to try again and hopefully they will become our next Community Champion.”
