Region's top engineering projects shortlisted for awards

The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) has announced a host of projects that will be recognised at its annual Yorkshire and Humber Awards.

Twenty projects* have been shortlisted for the awards across the three categories.

The awards will be presented to highlight the outstanding work done by civil engineers from across the region over the past two years. They are divided into three categories; projects with a total cost in excess of £5 million compete for the Centenary Award, those between £500,000 and £5 million can apply for the Smeaton Award, and those costing under £500,000 are eligible for the Sir John Fowler Award.

In 2016 the Centenary Award was won by the new Leeds Station Southern Entrance, the Smeaton Award by the Scarborough Railway Bridge, over the River Ouse in York, and the Sir John Fowler Award went to Naburn Weir Elver and Lamprey Pass, near York.

Professor Tim Broyd, the Institution’s President, will be presenting the awards at the ICE’s annual gala dinner, which is the finale of his two day visit to the region in March. Entertainment, food and drinks will all be on the agenda at the black tie event, at York’s impressive National Railway Museum on the 3rd March.

I would like to thank all the nominees for taking the time to put forward an entry and helping to raise the profile of the profession. We had to make some tough choices to decide on the shortlist.

“There are thousands of civil engineers in Yorkshire and the Humber who work every day to design, improve and maintain the infrastructure that we all rely on, from apprentices starting their first jobs, to senior engineers, business leaders and academics at the top of their fields. These awards are a great opportunity to highlight the work they do and the positive impact it has on our lives.”
