Bury manufacturer Roxtec receives London Underground approval
Cable seal manufacturer Roxtec has received a thumbs up for its modular cable seal system from London Underground.
The Bury-based firm’s multi-cable transit system underwent a rigorous 18-month testing process and is now cleared for use on the capital’s extensive Tube network.
Over £5.5bn will be spent on upgrading London’s underground transport network in the coming years to ramp up the frequency and efficiency of its trains.
Graham O’Hare, the managing director at Roxtec, said his company’s sealing system will play a “key role” in the upgrades, enabling cables to pass between separate areas while protecting people and infrastructure from various hazards.
He said: “We’re delighted Roxtec is able to provide a key safety component in transforming and modernising the London Underground network, which is part way through the biggest improvement to be carried out in 60 years.”
Discussing the company’s modular cable seal system, he said it is able to maintain its integrity and continue providing insulation for at least an hour in the event of a fire.
It is also able to shield an area against smoke, gas, dust and humidity.
Speaking further, Graham said: “The Roxtec system could be used in a wide variety of locations across the Tube network, including trackside in relocatable equipment buildings, junction boxes, control cabinets and substations.
“Up to six units measuring 0.5m x 0.3m each can be used in station areas, while one unit of the same size has been cleared for use in tunnels.”
Approval for the London Underground, Graham explained, is considered the global rail industry’s “gold standard”.
He continued: “The process took 18 months to complete, during which every Roxtec fire certificate was read and interpreted at a specialist testing facility. Further tests were carried out for smoke density in line with London Underground standards. Having prior approval also means less paperwork for clients installing our cable transit systems.”
