Spot the Difference with a BioTec 1

Before starting any installation, regardless of the system required our contracts manager need to take consideration into what kind of reinstatement is required; at one site in Stockton on Tees our contract Manager Ian Murray had to consider what will be disturbed by the works being carried out.

For the machinery to access the necessary area for the installation we were required to clear an entrance through the pre-existing garden wall and over a small section of the planted area, we anticipated it to be approximately 2.5 metres wide to fit all of the require plant in along with the treatment vessel. Our Installation team took care in making sure they only removed an obligatory amount of the boundary wall.

Unfortunately due to the drainage line that we were required to connect to we also needed to excavate through crazy paving in the garden area, this entailed using a floor saw to cut the necessary channel for the pipework. We however would be unable to re-establish the required section therefore we stipulated that the customer would need to source the replacement themselves.

Our installation team will always try their best to return the site to the condition it was in to begin with and make a conscientious effort to tidy up any excess mess. Spoil can also be removed from site by request of the customer for a cost.

For this installation the plant we had recommended that a Klargester BioTec 1 sewage treatment system with a 1.5 metre invert to replace the existing septic tank and filter bed. The above plant was to serve a 4 bedroom property and was to be installed at the bottom gravel area of the lawn and the treated effluent to be discharged to the adjacent stream.

On this site there was also a large amount of drainage that needed to be installed with 55 metres of inlet drainage and 45 metres of outlet drainage. Along both lines we installed inspection chambers which are an essential addition to the drainage lines as these allow for the pipework to be checked for blockages and for samples to be taken should they be required.

Another thing our contracts managers need to consider when quoting for an installation is what access is like for site, this counts for when the installation is taking place and for afterwards when maintenance on the system will be required. Unfortunately for this site access was tricky and it was agreed that the customer would arrange for the existing septic tank to be emptied by the contractor they had been using during the duration of the previous septic tank being installed.

The soil was to be removed from site by using an 8 cubic yard builder’s skip which was to be located on the driveway during the installation. To load the skip we used a 1 ton high tip dumper to move the spoil from the excavation area to where the skip was located.

Although the main procedure for each installation remains the same it is always vital to consider what each site will need to make the installation run as smoothly as possible. We therefore always recommended that one of our contracts managers attends site to assess the site specific details.
