Deliveroo turned unwanted kitchenware into a functioning bike
Close your eyes. Think really hard. When was the last time you used that fondue set you bought two years ago? What about that spiraliser? Or the breadmaker?
Cant remember? Dont worry, you’re not alone. According to Deliveroo, the average household has 34 unused kitchen items, totalling £276. There are 27m households in the UK, which means there are over 900 million unused kitchen items in kitchen across the UK. That’s over £7billion worth of gadgets and gizmos collecting dust in the kitchen cupboard.
Deliveroo, however, has come up with a refreshing way to revitalise these cooking implements, and free up precious storage space - the Deliveroo up-cycled bike.
Working with Design Works engineer, Sean Miles, they have designed and built a fully-functional bicycle, constructed entirely from 74 of the least-used kitchen items in the UK - including biscuit-cutters, whisks and blenders.
The Deliveroo up-cycle bicycle will now join the fleet of 12,000 riders that deliver food across the UK every day.
Sean Miles, head of production at Design Works, commented: “My cupboards are full of expensive cooking gadgets that are collecting nothing but dust. It’s so sad to see these materials - steel, wood, and glass - fall into obsolescence. This project, to make unloved and unused equipment useful again, appealed to my ‘Make Do and Mend’ sensibilities. It’s so exciting to work with Deliveroo to give a new lease of life to thousands of perfectly good raw materials”
