Conlon will refurbish the academy’s existing accommodation and deliver new buildings on Lytham Road

Preston-based Conlon Construction chosen for multi-million pound Blackpool academy project

Conlon Construction has been chosen to lead a multi-million pound design and build project at Armfield Academy in Blackpool.

The Preston-based building firm secured its place on the scheme, named after former Blackpool FC defender Jimmy Armfield, through the Education Funding Agency (EFA) Regional Contractors Framework.

As part of the project, Conlon will refurbish the academy’s existing accommodation and deliver new buildings on Lytham Road, on the site of the former independent school.

The company said it will work closely with Chester’s Lovelock Mitchell Architects to create plans for a space that provides an “inspiring study experience” for pupils.

The school is to be run by Fylde Coast Academy Trust and will accommodate 1,180 youngsters aged two to 16.

Conlon’s phased programme of works gets underway this autumn, with the first students due to arrive in September 2018.

Overall completion is forecast for Spring 2019.

Conlon Construction’s commercial director, Darren Lee, said: “Having delivered projects through the EFA for several years now, we have built up extensive experience in the education sector.

“This scheme is all the more exciting for me as I live just around the corner from the development and know that the new school will be of great significance to the local community and something everyone in the area can be proud of.”

He added: “We want to do our best for the families in Blackpool as the demand for school places is expected to rise.”

Fylde Coast Academy Trust CEO Tony Nicholson commented : “Sponsored by Hodgson Academy and Blackpool Sixth Form College, we already successfully run seven schools in the area and suitable accommodation will be vital in enabling us to provide the same quality offer for parents and students in the south of Blackpool.

“We’re thrilled to be working with Conlon Construction as the team is renowned for delivering great education projects across the North West.”
