Plans in for £26m apartment scheme in Manchester’s Castlefield

Mulbury, the Cheshire-headquartered developer, has submitted plans for an apartment scheme in the Castlefield area of Manchester.

If approved, the £26m project will transform the site of the derelict Excelsior Mill, located on Hulme Hall Road, into an eight-storey block overlooking nearby Bridgewater Canal.

Mulbury said the 108-apartment scheme, designed by Manchester firm Tim Groom Architects, provides a solution for a brownfield site that has lain vacant since the printing and book binding works was demolished after partially collapsing in July 2015.

The development’s one-, two- and three-bedroom homes will be marketed for private sale.

Some units will have balconies and access to a rooftop garden, while an underground car park will offer on-site parking.

James Alderson, the head of the firm’s city centre residential division Mulbury City, said: “This is an important scheme for Castlefield because it fills in a vacant plot along the canal.

“It also brings back an active frontage to the canal towpath with its double-height entrance. We’ve had overwhelmingly positive feedback so far on the design of the scheme.”

Architect Tim Groom commented: “The design responds to the distinct Manchester context of Castlefield and the turn in the canal.

“We have looked to reinterpret the architectural history of the site and the old-fashioned printing trays in some of the ornamentation around the building entrances at roadside and canal edge.”

He added: “The design complements traditional and modern buildings in the vicinity while sitting comfortably alongside Castlefield’s historic core.”
