Karbon Homes starts work on £2.27m Nettlesworth development
Karbon Homes, the newly established housing provider, has started work on phase two of its affordable housing scheme in Chester-le-Street.
The second phase of The Green in Nettlesworth, an extension of an existing development of 24 properties, comprises 19 two-bed family homes.
Construction firm Galliford Try Partnerships’ North East arm is the main contractor for the £2.27m phase two, being built on land transferred by Durham County Council.
The first part of the development, completed in March 2015, created eight two-bed bungalows and 16 two-bed homes to bring the total number of new properties at The Green to 43. To date, £6.17m has been invested in the area’s housing stock.
The Government’s Homes and Communities Agency awarded a grant of £608k for the scheme, which boasts energy efficient homes featuring improved thermal efficiency in their windows, walls and roofs.
Karbon Homes’ assistant director of development and property, Zoey Hawthorn, said: “This is a significant milestone for Karbon Homes as we are committed to providing much-needed, high quality affordable homes for local families across the North East.
“Our aim is to build more than 500 new homes each year to rent or buy and this is one of our first schemes to get underway.”
She added: “There was high demand for these properties after we completed phase one and we are confident this scheme will be just as popular.”
Karbon Homes was established with the merger of Cestria Community Housing, Isos Housing and Derwentside Homes. The organisation started trading as a single business earlier this month.
Sara Holmes, development director for Galliford Try Partnerships North East, commented: “We are delighted to be working again with a valued partner – albeit Karbon is now a larger and more influential organisation in the sector.
“We share its aims of improving the quality and choice of homes of all tenures across the region.”
The second phase of The Green development is due for completion early 2018.
