The building will officially relaunch in the Autumn

Completion date for £845k makeover of Liverpool’s Unity Theatre pushed back

The team delivering Build Unity Better, the six-figure redevelopment of Unity Theatre in Liverpool, has announced a new opening schedule for the venue.

Unity Theatre, currently undergoing a £845k makeover, will now look to open with a short soft-launch summer season this June and July.

The building will officially relaunch in the Autumn.

The changes have been attributed to issues slowing progress during the final phase of the redevelopment of the theatre’s historic building. Unity said it will have no long-term effect on its Build Unity Better project.

Matthew Linley, Unity Theatre’s artistic director and CEO, said: “Our ambition was always to keep our closure period as short as possible for our audiences, artists, staff and volunteers, and it is unfortunate that our plans have changed.

“However, we are staying focused on the end result, and what our revitalised venue will do for us as an organisation, and for the people of Liverpool and beyond.”

He continued: “I would like to thank the artists and artistic partners who have been involved in the rescheduling and programme reshuffle, for all their understanding and support – they truly have been terrific.

“Most of all I’d like to thank our own staff, who as ever have proved themselves to be exceptionally able and positive while we navigate our way through the logistics of revising the schedule.”

Unity Theatre said all bookers from affected shows will be contacted about changes to the programme from this week (May 9).
