University of Salford opens new ‘dementia-friendly’ research hub

Project management consultancy Faithful+Gould has completed work on a new Dementia Hub for the Salford Institute for Dementia.

Working in partnership with the University of Salford Estates Team, the company is officially launching the space to coincide with Dementia Awareness Week (May 14-20).

Faithful+Gould was called upon by the Salford Institute for Dementia to deliver social space that will act as a ‘nerve centre’ for research, education and engagement activities between its associates and the community.

The company said its design team worked closely with the institute’s Prof. Anthea Innes, Dr Monika Sharma and other associates to develop a scheme that would reduce stress and ease decision making for those living with dementia.

The aim of the Hub is to also encourage independence and social integration.

Faithful+Gould project manager George McDonough said of the work: “This has been an incredibly exciting project to work on.

“I’ve been seconded to the University’s estates department and it’s been fascinating to see how important stakeholder engagement has been in the project’s success, with feedback from people living with dementia as well as their carers.”

George added: “Small, but key, design decisions make an enormous difference to the success of such a project.”

Design details making the Hub dementia friendly include wayfinding markings to assist navigation and domestic styling for a homely feel.

Additionally, the floors avoid coverings with patterns and the furniture does not have shiny materials or finishes.

Faithful+Gould carried out the scheme’s project management and quantity surveying elements, while DAY Architectural served as architects. ISE was appointed as mechanical and electrical services contractor.
