Historic Wirral law courts become new homes in £2.1m transformation

The Old Court House in Wallasey is preparing to welcome its first residents after a £2.1m project converted the historic site into new homes.

The former Wirral courthouse, which sat behind netting and scaffolding for the last year, has been transformed into 21 apartments for affordable rent by building firm M&Y Maintenance and Construction.

The property was built in the early 1900s and originally served as the headquarters for the Cheshire Constabulary’s Wirral Division, before being acquired by Wirral Council in the 1970s.

Under the renovation, delivered in partnership with the council, the building’s interior was converted into a mix of one- and two-bedroom apartments to be managed by housing firm Regenda Homes.

The site’s brick exterior has been carefully repaired, restored and retained.

Gill Kelly, managing director at St Helens-based M&Y Maintenance and Construction, said: “This has been a fantastic project to work on and we are immensely proud with it how it looks.

“This was a complex job that we had to approach very sympathetically to ensure that we respected the local historical interest in the building.”

Gill added: “I believe the end product demonstrates how old buildings can repurposed to provide affordable new homes for our communities.”

Wirral Council’s Cabinet Member for Housing and Community Safety, Cllr George Davies, commented: “It is great to see this fantastic local landmark so thoughtfully and purposefully brought back into use, providing affordable social housing.

“Increasing the supply and provision of affordable homes is one of our key objectives, as set out in both the Wirral Plan and the Council’s Housing Strategy.”

He continued: “I am delighted that we have been able to support this project in the way that we have and look forward to seeing the first new residents moving in.”
