Gain the edge in construction with CPD

“Investing in continuing professional development is essential if you want to retain a competitive edge in the fast-moving construction industry,” says David Greenwood, Professor of Construction Management, Northumbria University, Newcastle.

“We find that this is the main driver for organisations that come to us to deliver CPD courses. They want their people to be up to date so that their business can fulfil their full potential.”

Northumbria offers a range of CPD courses for construction professionals including Leadership Excellence and Talent Development in the Construction Industries, BIM training and NEBOSH Health and Safety Courses.

Skills and motivation

Architectural Design Practice Faulkner Browns has a long track record of using Northumbria’s Continuing Professional Development (CPD) courses to equip staff with the skills and motivation to success in a globally competitive and dynamic marketplace.

Colin Peebles, Operations Director says; “As a business we have always taken the development of our staff very seriously and we have invested a considerable amount in CPD with Northumbria University.

“We have found that participants discover a great deal about themselves, their strengths and their weaknesses and this increase in self-awareness alongside access to the latest thinking in construction and project management is leading to better performing individuals and teams.” “We compete for work across the UK and internationally so attracting and retaining top quality talent is crucial. Offering education and training with organisations like Northumbria University plays a significant role in this.”

Talent development

Northumbria’s Leadership Excellence and Talent Development programme is a bespoke CPD course which can be tailored to fit the needs of the organisation.

“We offer all construction-related organisations options for developing leaders and workplace talent, increasing capacity to deliver on-budget, on-schedule and environmentally-aware projects,” adds Professor Greenwood.

“We start by understanding the specific needs of the organisation and will tailor an exclusive learning package which can be developed at a time and place to suit.

“We work with all kinds of organisations within the construction sector including; house builders, architectural practices, project consultancies, building services, surveyors and civil and structural engineers.”

Building Information Modelling

Northumbria co-founded BIM Academy with Ryder Architecture in 2010 to offer research, consultancy, education, and training in Building Information Modelling (BIM), a process for creating and managing information on construction projects throughout their lifecycle.

“In the UK BIM is already compulsory on centrally funded government projects so everyone involved with the design, engineering, construction and operation of buildings and infrastructure needs to be BIM ready,” says Richard Watson, BIM Consultant at Northumbria’s BIM Academy.

“We offer a suite of BIM CPD courses to increase BIM awareness and understanding and to develop the skills and knowledge required for businesses to adopt collaborative BIM.”
Northumbria’s BIM Academy is an Autodesk Authorised Training Centre (ATC) and an Autodesk Certification Centre (ACC) and offers training courses for all levels from novice through to expert.

Increasing compliance

Northumbria also offers a range of NEBOSH (The National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health) accredited courses to help workforces safe, healthy and compliant. The accredited NEBOSH National Construction Certificate is a leading H&S qualification that covers the fundamental legal requirements relating to health and safety in construction work in the UK.

The NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety is aimed at managers, supervisors, and staff whose day-to-day responsibilities include health and safety. Whilst for professional health and safety advisors and environmental practitioners, the must-have National Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety is NEBOSH’s flagship professional qualification and can be studied part-time or via distance learning.
