Royal Birkdale strengthens digital footing ahead of Open Championship

Royal Birkdale has teamed up with a creative agency to strengthen its digital footing ahead of this weekend’s Open Championship.

The Sefton golf course called on Bolton-based Absolute to update its web presence, enabling it to handle the high volume of traffic predicted over the coming days.

Royal Birkdale also tasked the Absolute team with improving its website’s user experience, delivering a new showcase video and updating on-site visuals with a brand makeover.

Absolute MD Chris Hodgen said: “Royal Birkdale is a course steeped in history and prestige. With the 2017 Open Championship scheduled to take place here, all eyes will be on the club and its brand as it steps up onto a global stage.

“This meant that in addition to a new website able to cope with much higher levels of traffic, a brand update was needed to ensure the right message is being delivered.”

He added: “When it came to developing content for this, we focused on the spirit of the club, its members, its clubhouse and the challenging course itself.”

Royal Birkdale has hosted more championships and international golfing events since the Second World War than any other course in the world.

As the host of this year’s Open, course bosses are expecting web traffic to leap by 2,500% over the tournament weekend (July 20-23).
