How could you earn more money for doing exactly the same job role?
New research has shown that you could be earning up to 140 per cent more than the national average salary just because of where you live.
Gathered by CV Library, a UK jobsite, the data has revealed that people who work the very same job could be paid more or less depending on where they are based in the country.
An analysis of 167,000 jobs, focusing on 24 locations throughout the UK and Republic of Ireland, available on CV Library discovered substantial differences in salaries for doing the same work, which go further than the typical North-South divide.
Lee Biggins, founder and managing director of CV-Library, commented: “While it’s not groundbreaking to suggest that those living in London get paid higher wages on average, it is surprising to see how much people’s salaries can vary for doing the same job depending on where they live.”
For example, bus drivers can earn up to £34,244 if they are working in Birmingham - which is 44 per cent above average. This is a huge comparison to the likes of Sheffield, where the average bus driver is paid just £15,113 - 36 per cent below.
However, it is no surprise that jobs in the likes of teaching can earn people up to 18 per cent more than the average wage of just over £26k if they are living in London, with the cost of living there being considerably higher than the rest of the UK.
But living in the capital doesn’t mean that everyone will get an equally higher wage. For instance, the research showed that a dentist could earn 18 per cent less than the national average by staying in the capital, compared to 28 per cent more in Liverpool.
Despite these findings, you could be reassured in the fact that life changing jobs’ wages - doctors, firefighters - tend to be balanced throughout the country.
Biggins continued: “It is reassuring to see jobs which are critical to the welfare of people, such as staff nurses and support workers, showing small levels of variance around the country with under £10k difference between low and high salaries.”
Research showed that a typical staff nurse earns an average of £29,654, and in Belfast they could earn just 10 per cent more.
In conclusion, it seems the creative and marketing industries are more competitive, with Biggins adding: “Web development is seeing a salary difference of over £50k depending on location.”
