Trio of Sheffield City Region transport schemes to receive £10m government funding
Nearly £10m of government funding is set to be pumped into three different transport schemes across the Sheffield City Region.
In Doncaster, £3.32m of funding has been secured for widening of the A18 Thorne Road railway bridge, while £3.24m is being allocated towards improvements at the College Road roundabout in Rotherham.
In Sheffield, £3.36m will be spent on improving the A61 Chesterfield Road at the junction with Broadfield Road.
The money is part of a £345.3m funding package announced by the Department for Transport on Thursday 19th October, which aims to improve local roads and public transport across the country.
Sir Nigel Knowles, chairman of the Sheffield City Region Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP), said: “Here in Sheffield City Region we are already achieving transformational change and building a thriving, super-connected and successful economy. Transport links are absolutely key to this.
“It is vital that transport infrastructure continues to unlock economic growth in the city region and across the UK, and that local, regional and national funds continue to support us in achieving improvements in our road capacity.
“We at Sheffield City Region have a strong track record for getting things done, and I am delighted that, working in close collaboration with our local authority partners, we have secured this funding.”
In SheffieId, £3.36m of funding has been secured towards a scheme on the A61 at Heeley, which will cost a total of £4.8m. Chesterfield Road is already being widened alongside Heeley Retail Park in order to improve bus and car journeys, and this next piece of work will look at the Broadfield Road and Queens Road areas, to review options for improvements to key junctions and blend this with much-needed maintenance work.
In Doncaster, £3.32m will go towards a £4.75m scheme to widen the A18 road under the railway bridge, to eliminate a “pinch point.”
The aim is that the works will also improve capacity and accessibility leading towards the town centre and onto Wheatley Hall Road, while also unlocking economic growth and accelerating the delivery of new housing schemes.
As for the scheme in Rotherham, DfT funding of £3.24m will contribute to a £4.63m scheme to improve capacity on the College Road roundabout, to enable future economic growth in the area.
