Morrisons set to cut 1,500 managerial roles
Morrisons has announced plans to cut around 1,500 store management jobs in an attempt to restructure how it’s stores operate.
The Bradford-headquartered supermarket chain also said that 1,700 junior staff positions will be created.
On Thursday morning (February 1st), Morrisons informed staff of the restructuring proposals, which would see a dramatic reduction in managerial roles but more customer service employees.
However, it is believed that not all the 1,500 jobs will be lost as there are around 800 current management vacancies at the grocer, which current managers can apply for.
Gary Mills, Morrisons retail director, said: “Our aim is to serve customers better with more frontline colleagues in stores improving product availability and helping customers at the checkouts.
“Very regrettably, there will be a period of uncertainty for some managers affected by these proposals and we’ll be supporting them through this important process.
“Our commitment is to redeploy as many affected colleagues as possible.”
As a result of these proposals, around 700 employees will either face redundancy or take on a lower paid position within Morrisons.
The supermarket chain is planning to implement these changes in April.
