Gigabit Wi-Fi has been launched in York railway station
A free Gigabit Wi-Fi service has been launched in York railway station by TalkTalk Group.
The free Wi-Fi will mean customers, rail passengers and commuters can experience next generation full fibre internet with speeds of up to one gigabit per second – 20x faster than the average fibre connection.
In addition, York’s Ultra Fibre Optic team will be on hand at a new information centre in the station to provide help and advice on connecting to the Wi-Fi in the station and give updates on the city wide roll out of York’s Ultra Fibre Optic.
Station visitors can access the gigabit speed Wi-Fi network free of charge by finding ‘1GigYorks_UFO’ to connect their device.
Commuters will be able to download tickets, movies, music or check emails ready for their onward train journeys in just a few seconds. Visitors can also find out if they’re able to get York’s Ultra Fibre Optic installed in their home or business and register their interest or place an order at the station information centre.
With gigabit Wi-Fi, it is possible for a two-hour HD film to be downloaded in seven seconds or 100 songs to be downloaded in three seconds, tasks that currently take more than 25 minutes and eight minutes in an average UK home.
TalkTalk is building a city wide full fibre, Ultra Fibre Optic network which will reach 50,000 homes and businesses across the city in the next two years, delivering internet connectivity with speeds of 1000Mb directly into residents’ properties.
TalkTalk revealed that it is in initial discussions with Infracapital to bring full fibre networks to 3 million homes in mid-sized towns and cities across Britain. York is the first city in the UK to have city-wide full fibre all the way from the exchange into homes or businesses that is both accessible and affordable for residents.
Charles Dunstone, executive chairman of TalkTalk Group, said: “York is the first city in the UK where we are building a ‘full fibre’ network and we wanted people to be able to really experience the difference of a ‘gigabit connection’ for themselves.
“We are thrilled to be opening this fantastic new centre at York Station and we hope visitors will connect and make the most of the speeds. People will be able to stream HD TV, download and upload videos, music, photos and apps in seconds while waiting for their onward journeys.”
Ultra Fibre Optic will be available to homes and businesses across York over the next two years.
