Meet the successful tech startup disrupting the North East's digital market

North East startup, Epic Social has enjoyed much success so far after only launching six months ago.

The group has already experienced a growing workforce with the move to a larger office space in the pipeline, as well as making several high-profile contacts.

Specialising in results-driven, creative solutions for clients operating across a range of industry sectors including retail, automotive and real estate, Epic Social is the biggest new disruptor to join the North East’s supposedly booming digital industry.

Recognising a niche in the regional market for a high-end social media advertising agency, the business was created by tech innovator, Ben Maughan, and portfolio entrepreneur, Aidan Sunter.

Their job with Epic Social is to provide a solution for brands which would help them get their products and services in front of an engaged target audience by combining the disciplines of ‘outside the box’ creative content with highly-targeted paid advertising.

Ben said: “There is a real lack of resources for good social media management in the North East.

“We wanted to create something that would deliver tangible results and return on investment for clients while also giving them something of value that engages their audiences and raises the profile of their brand.”

Initially pitching its services to SMEs, Epic Social quickly discovered that multi-national, franchised organisations needed help localising their social media channels in order to appeal to their demographics.

In just under six months, the agency counts licensed outlets of McDonald’s, Porsche, BMW and Mini among its growing client base.

Ben added: “Our startup experience from where we were six months ago to where we are now has been one giant learning curve.

“Everything from how we approach new business leads to the type of companies that we target has changed completely.

“Through new client wins and continuous investment into staff and resources, we’re well on our way to becoming one of the UK’s fastest growing social media agencies.”

Currently employing seven highly-skilled members of staff - including specialist social media account managers, graphic designers and award-winning videographers - Epic Social has big plans to more than double its headcount by the end of 2018 and move its operations from its current base to the heart of Newcastle.

Aidan concluded: “Substantial investment in the best people and the best quality equipment was key to making Epic Social a reality.

“Having previously been a client of a small agency, I was surprised at their inability to create content that I felt represented my big vision for the business.

“It became clear that there was an opportunity to establish an agency which could produce high-quality content, to create a true point of difference between the user-generated content many smaller businesses are producing. This has become our niche.”
