Mobike rolls in dockless cycling to Newham
Mobike, the world’s first smart bike sharing company, is announcing the arrival of the its bikes to Newham just weeks after rolling the scheme in South London.
In the coming weeks, Mobike will work with Newham Council to deploy 300 Mobikes and 50 Mobike Hubs, initially focused around the Royal Docks and Stratford but usable across the borough.
Mobike will also be working with the council to adapt the scheme to the borough’s local infrastructure and cycling patterns. This will ensure that both landmarks like the Royal Docks and the Olympic Park and more isolated areas have consistent bike availability.
The Newham scheme will also be the first to use Mobike’s new bikes, a larger and lighter model, specifically built to match European cyclists’ preferences. The range of new functional features will include a gear system, dynamo rear lights, and a newly designed basket including a cup-holder.
Mobike users will park in the designated on-street dockless cycle parking bays within Newham, which can be found on the Mobike App. Mobike’s deposit is currently capped at £1 and users are then charged 50p per 30 minutes.
Steve Pyer, UK general manager for Mobike, said: “Just a few weeks after Southwark, Newham is another exciting place for us to move to.
“Newham has great spots for cycling, such as the Olympic Park, Royal Docks and the newly regenerated Greenway, as well as great cycle links into the City and surrounding areas. We think Mobike will be an exciting development for all, and will have a great impact on people’s quality of life.”
Ken Clark, Newham’s deputy mayor (statutory), added: “We are very excited about Mobike’s launch into the Royal Docks. Whether it’s the DLR, Emirates Airline, and London City Airport or soon to arrive Crossrail – residents, workers and visitors to the Royal Docks will have more choice than any other, about how to travel around. It’s yet another signal of the area’s remarkable transformation.
“This scheme aims to make it easier and cheaper for residents to access and use bicycles across the borough and will put an affordable bicycle journey within easy reach of the people of Newham”.
Steve Pyer added: “Our goal is to make cycling available to everyone, everywhere, so cities can start becoming noticeably greener. With the recent expansion of our scheme to South London, and now Newham, we are more and more able to offer people an uninterrupted cycling journey across the city.
“We hope this will encourage neighbouring boroughs to open their doors to bike sharing, so we can all work together to truly open up cycling in London.”
Mobike is already present in the London boroughs of Ealing, Hounslow, Islington, the City and Southwark, as well as in Manchester, Newcastle and Oxford.
Worldwide, Mobike operates in 15 countries, and over 200 cities. It has a fleet of 9 million bikes, ridden over 30 million times a day.
