Is it wise for small businesses to rely on psychometric tests to recruit employees?
This is a question that is asked by many entrepreneurs and HRs when trying to recruit candidates to fill up different positions lying vacant in their organization. According to studies, around 46% of the new hires are found to fail within a period of 18 months of their selection. Further break-up have identified 89% to fail due to attitudinal reasons like human interactions, personality traits, etc., when compared to cognitive ability like language, problem solving, logic & reasoning, etc. For small entrepreneurs having tight budget and more competition to face with, they do not have any choice to make the correct decision while selecting staffs for their business.

It is the well selected, talented and knowledgeable team that can withstand pressure and perform well in all circumstances to boost the business. For this reason, the selection process is required to be stringent and well researched one. It should be scientific and logical based, so as to eliminate rooms for mistakes and wrong selections. As a matter of fact, it is the duty and responsibility of the recruiting managers to hire the correct set of people for the job and to develop strong teams, who can perform together to the optimum. For smaller businesses, this does mean a lot.

The test also needs to be customized to suit the specific requirements and needs of the business and that of the position which to be filled in. an effective recruitment process needs can be termed to be one that ensures taking carefully crafted approach towards staff selection. It needs to focus first on the individual’s technical ability, then on motivational or attitudinal disposition and lastly on cultural fit. The test also is to evaluate the ability of the potential candidate to perform the job without any hassle or trouble. He/she should fit the job requirements perfectly instead of finding it tough and out of ideas all the time.
Personality testing
This is considered to be a tool that is used during the recruitment process by bigger organizations and MNCs, the world over. Previously, it was overlooked by the small entrepreneurs. But with time, personality testing or psychometric testing is being favoured by small businesses due to its effectiveness and high efficiency to select the right candidate for the job.
This test has been designed to predict employee behaviour at the workplace. Rather, an attempt is made through this evaluation to predict the working capability of the individual, instead of bothering if they possess the right set of skills to carry out the job under extreme pressure. At the same time, the results of the test also will clearly show the candidate’s efficiency towards interacting with the others and if/he she is a team player or not.
These test tools are being relied upon heavily by small companies to screen candidates to ensure ‘perfect fit’. The objective here is to improve overall productivity and to reduce expenses.
