STUDENTS SUPPORT LIVERPOOL’S BID FOR CHANNEL 4

Following the news that Liverpool has been included in the shortlist to become the new home of Channel 4, media and journalism students from The City of Liverpool College have spoken out to show their support for the city.

Elizabeth Thomas, media student at The City of Liverpool College, said:

“As someone who wants to work in the media industry, I have to think about moving to other cities to access the opportunities. It would be great to have somewhere to aspire to work at within the city.

“It would offer jobs for young people and people from the surrounding areas who would otherwise have to move further afield and would inspire more people in the region to work in the media industry.

Jordan Boyd, journalism student at The City of Liverpool College, said:

“An opportunity like this would put Liverpool on the map to compete with the likes of London, which is needed as many opportunities in the industry seem to be in the South.

“Liverpool would see a higher rate in other companies moving to the city as well as more jobs being created. Having these opportunities would bring more people to the city to stay.”

The City of Liverpool College is the largest in the region, with a student population of almost 10,000 and more than a third of 16-18 year olds in the city studying with the college.

Elaine Bowker, Principal of The City of Liverpool College, added:

“Having Channel 4’s headquarters in Liverpool City Region would bring the opportunity to develop the region’s burgeoning skills in a growing industry and giving the channel access to the talent that exists in the city and beyond.

“At The City of Liverpool College, we have a huge amount of talented people coming through our state-of-the-art digital academy and arts centre, with our journalism and creative and digital media courses being designed with industry standards in mind. As a result, we provide a ready-made workforce for organisations such as Channel 4 to develop the next generation of industry talent, making the city a perfect fit.”
