Plans submitted for £9m ‘employment generating’ scheme in Beverley

Plans are in for a mixed-use development that could create scores of jobs in Beverley.

The £9m project includes a 22,870 sq ft Lidl and units for additional retailers and leisure operators.

Subject to approval, the Lidl store alone will create at least 40 full- and part-time jobs.

The proposals were submitted to East Riding Council by planning consultancy Lichfields, on behalf of supermarket giant Lidl and West Yorkshire property developer Cookridge Estates LLP.

According to Lichfields, steps to secure tenants for the scheme’s other units are moving forward.

The development is earmarked for land west of Hull Road, south of Beverley. The site is allocated for a mix of uses, including around 800 homes.

Cookridge Estates’ plans include 124 parking spaces and new vehicle access from the nearby Hull Road/Minster Way roundabout.

Peta Pank, senior consultant acquisitions at Lidl, said: “We are pleased to be progressing this scheme and look forward to working with the council and Cookridge to bring the site forward.

“Our foodstore and the other commercial developments will complement the proposed residential development on adjoining land to the south of Beverley.”

Duncan Waller, of Cookridge Estates, commented: “We are in advanced talks with a national coffee outlet and we continue to talk to interested parties for the remaining units.”

Lichfields senior director Jonathan Wallace said of the project: “A new Lidl store will enhance local consumer choice for residents of Beverley.

“The proposals will complement the substantial number of new homes, create employment-generating development, and provide new retail and food and drink facilities to meet the needs of occupiers of the new developments and the wider Beverley area.”

East Riding Council is due to consider the application in October. If greenlit, work will get underway in early 2019.
