Teesside Uni helps Internet of Things company secure £1.2m from Innovate UK
An Internet of Things company in Northumberland has developed its products and explored new international markets with the help of Teesside University.
Cramlington-based Transmission Dynamics was able to access four grants totalling £1.2m from innovation agency Innovate UK, thanks to its close working relationship with the university.
With support from uni staff, the company to carried out an intellectual property (IP) audit, which led to a general rethinking of how it protects its IP. Transmission Dynamics has since filed four patent applications.
The company manufactures data acquisition and wireless telemetry systems for firms in sectors such as renewable energy, marine, mining, defence, rail and automotive.
Transmission Dynamics’ sensors use Internet of Things technology to relay important information from what are often inhospitable environments, using AI and machine learning to interpret the data.
Teesside University provided support through its Enterprise Europe Network (EEN) project, which is Funded by the European Commission and Innovate UK.
Following the EEN scheme, Transmission Dynamics has established a partnership with a large French business and is currently exploring similar deals in Poland.
Chief exec Prof. Jarek Rosinski said: “Before we started working with Teesside University we had never really considered applying for grants.
“The grants from Innovate UK have allowed us to be a lot braver in the way in which we approach trying out new technical concepts in our business.”
He continued: “It’s been a real pleasure working with the University. A lot of it comes down to individuals, the people there have great deal of experience pitching and writing grant applications. It’s been a real eye-opener.”
The university’s director of academic enterprise, Laura Woods, commented: “Transmission Dynamics are creating some extremely advanced digital solutions to complex technical challenges.
“We’re very pleased that our support has been so pivotal in helping them build new partnerships and find new routes to innovation.”
