Tharsus CEO named Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering

An entrepreneurial North East business leader in product design and manufacturing has been honoured by a prestigious industry body this week.

Brian Palmer, CEO of Northumberland-based Tharsus, is one of 50 leading engineers from the UK and around the world to have been elected as Fellows of the Royal Academy of Engineering in recognition of their outstanding and continuing contributions to the profession.

Brian has been leading Tharsus for over 16 years now. In that time his leadership has seen the company reinvent itself as a leader in the emerging advanced machine and robotic sector. The company focused on collaborative, complex, early-stage prototype development to help customers improve their products, before evolving into an innovative business specialising in ‘original equipment design and manufacture’. Today, the firm boasts an impressive list of clients such as Rolls Royce, Ocado, BAE, QinetiQ and Safety-Kleen.

Founded in 1976, the Royal Academy of Engineering is the UK’s national academy for engineering and technology. It unites the most successful and talented engineers from academia and business – Fellows – to advance and promote excellence in engineering for the benefit of society.

Brian joined other high profile figures receiving their Fellowship at the same time, including engineering professors from such universities as Cambridge, Manchester and Sheffield and senior figures of businesses like BP, Shell and BAE systems.

All 50 new Fellows were formally admitted to the Academy at its AGM in London on Tuesday the 18th of September and now add their expertise to that of nearly 1,600 world-leading engineers from both industry and academia.

Speaking about this great honour, Brian said:

“This is a tremendous accolade and I am delighted to be named as a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering. I am looking forward to forging close collaborative relationships and exchanging ideas and knowledge with my peers as part of my new role.”
