Assystem Awarded Major Framework Contract by the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority

London, 05 November 2018 – Assystem, one of the top three nuclear engineering companies worldwide, has been awarded a major, multi-discipline design framework agreement to support the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA), a UK government research organisation responsible for the development of nuclear fusion power.

Assystem will support the engineering design of projects across all major disciplines including mechanical engineering, process engineering, electrical, control and instrumentation, building services and civil engineering, and integrated design.

The project complements Assystem’s commitment to the development of fusion power. Nuclear fusion will play an important part in the UK’s carbon-free energy in the future and, consequently, puts the UK one step closer to achieving the UK Climate Change Act target.

UKAEA researches fusion energy and related technologies, positioning the UK as a leader in sustainable nuclear energy. The Culham Centre for Fusion Energy (CCFE) is one of the world’s leading fusion research laboratories; aiming to develop fusion as a new source of clean energy for tomorrow’s power stations. The centre is home to the UK’s fusion research including the Mega Amp Spherical Tokamak (MAST) experiment upgrade as well as the Joint European Torus (JET), currently the world’s largest fusion device. CCFE has close links with other European and international fusion laboratories and the International Tokamak Experimental Reactor (ITER) under construction at Cadarache, France.

Christian Jeanneau, Nuclear Senior VP of Assystem, said: “We are proud to be contributing to the future of the nuclear industry by supporting the supply of sustainable energy in the UK. We are committed to building a long-term partnership with UKAEA as part of Assystem’s long-term strategic development and are delighted to be awarded this new framework agreement to provide multi-discipline engineering support.”

UKAEA Head of Business Development, Martin Townsend added: “UKAEA remains committed to supporting industry in securing business by partnering with companies to deliver new technologies and processes necessary for success in achieving fusion as a reliable energy source. Assystem is well-known for its expertise in engineering design which will benefit UKAEA in the mission to achieve fusion energy and collaborate with big fusion projects such as ITER.”
