Newcastle City Council chooses building firm for £20m new homes contract

Developer Tolent Living has secured a £20m contract to boost Newcastle’s housing stock with 148 new homes.

The deal for the Newcastle Annuity Scheme, in partnership with Newcastle City Council and Waypoint, will deliver homes across five separate sites.

Tolent is creating a mix of flats, bungalows and apartment blocks for affordable rent around the city’s West End.

The schemes are: Clumber Street at Cruddas Park, a four-storey block of 20 apartments; Hillhead Parkway at Chapel House, comprising 24 flats, five bungalows and a three-storey, 32-apartment block; Newbiggin Lane in Westerhope, which will have 12 flats and six bungalows; Avison Street in Arthur’s Hill, a development of 10 flats and five bungalows; and Coniston Court in Slatyford, comprising 12 flats and a three-storey complex with 22 apartments.

Work is already underway on the first three developments.

Newcastle City Council Deputy Leader Cllr Joyce McCarty recently joined Tolent Living commercial director Mike Brown for the ground-breaking ceremony at Clumber Street.

Pupils at the local school St Michael’s were invited to attend the ceremony and get a feel for construction and learn more about health and safety.

Mike Brown said: “Tolent Living has a history of delivering quality housing across the North East and beyond.

“We are proud to be part of an innovative housing delivery model with Waypoint and Newcastle City Council which will provide much needed, high quality accommodation for older people across the city.”

He added: “This project will run for two years and will bring employment and training opportunities to the area and provide real added social value to the City of Newcastle.”

Cllr Joyce McCarty, the council’s Cabinet Member for Housing, commented: “There are few things in life more important than a safe, secure and comfortable place to live.

“But for older people who need care or support at home it can sometimes be difficult to find a home that suits their needs.”

She continued: “Housing is a top priority for the council and we know that if we want to offer a range of options to meet the needs and aspirations of all our residents we need to do things differently.

“This project is a great example of this, allowing us to maximise limited resources and deliver a variety of good quality supported housing that promotes independent living.”
