St Helens construction firm gives students a taste of life after school

Students from Mill Green School were treated to a glimpse of working life during a visit to M&Y Maintenance and Construction.

Mill Green School, based in St Helens, provides education to children with special educational needs. The school is currently preparing 11 students for the world outside of education, and partnered with M&Y to help them develop new skills and gain a greater understanding of the workplace.

Students were given an overview of the work M&Y Maintenance and Construction does, before meeting individual team managers from across the business. During the meetings, team managers explained their roles to students and the career path they took after school.

Gill Kelly, Managing Director at M&Y, then sat down with each student to provide one-to-one coaching to help them develop their confidence. During the sessions, Gill covered basic interview techniques and gave the students tips on what employers are looking for from school leavers.

Gill said: “We were delighted to welcome the students from Mill Green School to our office. We are so proud of the work we do with this incredible school, and it was wonderful to sit down with students to hear about their future ambitions and share some interview techniques.”

John Thompson, Head of Mill Green School, said: “M&Y is a forward thinking, progressive business who realise the potential of Mill Green learners who have aspirations towards the world of work. We are really grateful for the long running and continued support that they give our students. We feel their ethos should stand as a shining example to local businesses who could gain so much from what our learners have to offer, and they should be proud of the support they are giving back to their community.”
