Flash in the pan: Brits love a #bathroom selfie on a night out
UK laminate manufacturer, Formica Group has announced new findings from its study into how Brits feel about using toilets outside their home.
Key findings include:
• Only 5% thought hospitality establishments have spotless loos • 65% of us think that the cleanliness of the toilets reflects the quality of the food • Over a quarter (27%) check the loos before deciding to eat or drink somewhere and more than one in two (56%) of us will not return if the toilets are not up to scratch.
The most disliked places to spend a penny, are trains (54%), night clubs (25%), pubs (21%), and reasons include loos being too dirty (58%), too busy, (12%), too smelly 46% or having unflattering lighting (4%)
Selfie Nation
One surprising finding was the number of Brits who love to snap selfies in loos on a night out. Over a quarter, (28%) of us will take a selfie in a restaurant, bar, or nightclub loo with over two thirds (64%) of 18-25 year olds snapping away, only 15% of those over 45 love a #bathroom selfie.
When asked what motivates the decision behind taking a selfie in a public toilet, the most popular reasons across all generations are being in the party mood (39%), great mirrors/lighting leading to a better shot. (34%). A quarter snap a selfie when the décor is stand out (28%).
For Generation Z, half (50%) cite being in the ‘party spirit’, close to half (47%) say it’s if their outfit or hair is looking good and one third (34%) snap away if the backdrop will up their selfie game
Joe Bell, Formica Group says “Surprisingly, glamourous loos are a draw for customers. There’s a real trend for club and bars designers to create statement toilets which provide something magical. These encourage people to up their selfie game and tag the venue on Insta.
He continues “Previously little thought was given to customers spending a penny, but now with every detail of a night out shared on social media, venues are upping their bathroom design game. While the bathroom is a private space, social media has blurred this and people love to snap selfies with a powerful backdrop”
