Japanese restaurant set to launch at former Marylebone home of ‘culinary institution’
A Japanese eatery is set to launch its second UK restaurant in the heart of Marylebone at the former site of an ‘influential’ eatery.
Mayfair-based concept Taka will take over the former home of The Providores restaurant at 109 Marylebone High Street.
The Japanese restaurant will occupy the 2,500 sq ft, three-floor site, which was previously home of Antipodean-style eatery The Providores for 18 years since its establishment in 2001.
Established by brother and sister duo Andrey and Anastasia Datsenko, Taka launched its first UK restaurant at Shepherd Market in Mayfair following success in Japan.
The new Marylebone venue will offer a selection of Japanese signature dishes from tataki, tempura, sashimi platters, inside out rolls and yakitori alongside beverages including sake, Japanese whiskies and liquors.
The Providores owners, Peter Gordon and Michael McGrath, commented: “Closing The Providores was an incredibly tough decision, but the right one for us personally.
“Taka have the ideal offer for the area, and we thank Shelley Sandzer for helping us find the right brand to take over this special site.”
The new lease was secured by property specialist Shelley Sandzer, who assisted Peter and Michael with finding a suitable brand for the site.
Nick Weir, partner at Shelley Sandzer, added: “The Providores is truly a part of Marylebone’s dining history, having brought to London nearly 20 years ago so many of the things we now take for granted in modern restaurants.
“Replacing this culinary institution was a big task, but we believe that in Taka we have found the right brand to take this much-loved space, and one that will continue the success of its predecessor.”
