Entrepreneurs set to bring Stateside flavour to Teesside with new food venture

A new store specialising in ‘real’ American-style milkshakes is set to launch in the heart of Teesside.

Entrepreneurial twins Darren and Lee Walker are opening The Thick Shake Company in Middlesbrough’s Dundas Indoor Market.

The store, which will specialise in ice cream beverages inspired by American diner-style milkshakes, will be the twins’ first permanent site after starting seasonal store Shake it Up Whitby on the North Yorkshire coast last year.

Co-founder Lee explained: “When I went to America [the milkshakes] tasted nothing like the ones here – where they are really milky. What we have a passion for are the thick ice cream shakes. We just wanted to bring them to The Boro.

“Being indoors is a major thing. The Dundas attracts people of all ages and we plan to sell shakes to appeal to different tastes.”

Dundas Indoor Market manager David Harris commented: “Darren and Lee have done a great deal of research and they bring a lot of enthusiasm to whatever they do.

“They’ve also demonstrated that they have an eye for business. I’m sure they are going to do really well here.”
