Local construction workers dress down to raise £400 for children at Queens Medical Centre

Wates colleagues from the Nottingham College City Hub construction site have been donning their glad rags for ‘Dress Down Fridays’ over the last few months, raising over £400 for the Children’s Ward at the Queen’s Medical Centre.

The money raised went towards new toys for the children, as well as special festive sweet treats and cards for patients and staff on the ward over Christmas.

Jessica Peet, Commercial Management Trainee at Wates Construction Midlands, said: “Making sure we are giving back to local communities is hugely important for everyone at Wates, and it’s been wonderful to build some very meaningful relationships with staff and kids on the QMC Children’s Ward. We wanted to do our bit to thank the staff for all the hard work they do each year.”

Work began on the £58 million Nottingham College City Hub on a brownfield site on Canal Street in June last year. The hub, which will provide high-quality college and community facilities, as well as a business hub, forms a central part of the Council’s plans to regenerate this area of Nottingham.

With work expected to be completed later this year, Wates has pledged its commitment to working with a local supply chain to create more training and employment opportunities for local people, with the aim of giving Nottingham an economic boost.

Adam Cannon, Project Director at Wates Construction Midlands, added: “With the hub expected to play a prominent role in growing Nottingham’s economy, we wanted to make sure we were doing everything we could to integrate our team with the local community.

“As well as creating more jobs for local people, we’ve been working closely with the college’s construction team on its student engagement programme to help demonstrate the wide variety of career opportunities within the built environment.

“We believe our sector knowledge and partnership approach will mean we deliver a high-quality education facility that will help to offer better training and skills resources, as well as foster better collaboration between the college and employers.”
