Facing COVID-19: The Indian restaurant giving virtual cooking lessons
An Indian street food restaurant has revamped the way it operates in order to keep business rolling through the pandemic.
My Delhi, based in Newcastle, is offering DIY recipe kits to combat its loss of footfall since the closure of restaurants in the UK.
As well as ingredients and spices, the kits include an instructional video on making the meals, so that customers can learn to cook as well as eat the restaurant’s food.
The restaurant has said there’s been a huge demand for the kits and it is getting orders from across the country.
As well as the DIY kits, the restaurant has been using its Mondays to deliver meals to vulnerable people through various charities.
Elahi Amin, owner of My Delhi, commented: “We’ve been overwhelmed by the amount of orders we’ve received.
“We’ve had to pull back on some of the promotion so we can deal with the current number of orders.
“The idea for these really came from the different initiatives we’ve been doing to help people stay at home.
“We’ve kept one eye on the business and another on how we can support our communities to stay at home. That’s really where the idea came from.
“We thought of doing a cooking show but for those who have cooked Indian food know how difficult and complex it can be.
“We explored how can we simplify the cooking process and get people enjoying it, without giving away restaurant secrets. The feedback so far has been amazing.”
