Plans resubmitted for £250m Quayside ‘urban village’ to incorporate green space
Updated plans for a development on Newcastle’s Quayside have been resubmitted with an increased emphasis on open space.
Developer Newby has resubmitted the plans for the £250m Quayside West development, which will see the 15-acre former Calders site on Skinnerburn Road transformed into an ‘urban village’.
The redeveloped plans have seen the reduction of residential units from 1,500 to 1,100 in order to create more open spaces.
In addition, buildings have been reconfigured to allow views of the River Tyne from the entrance to the site as well as opening up the arrival space with the removal of a commercial unit.
Plans for a hotel at the site have been amended to free up more space in the central plaza, with a new public green square and ‘break-out’ space for commercial uses. To the west of the site, a gateway building will now mark the site entrance, with heights reduced and blocks reconfigured.
It is estimated that the development will create over 500 jobs during its 10-year construction schedule, as well as creating hundreds of ongoing employment opportunities once completed.
