Coronavirus lockdown sparks rise in demand for anti-anxiety supplements
A company specialising in nutritional products and supplements has reported a spike in demand for its anti-anxiety solution following the coronavirus lockdown. Hello Pure has seen a 20% increase in sales of its ‘5-HTP+’ supplement, a natural alternative for stress and anxiety relief.
This comes after a study conducted by researchers from the University of Sheffield and Ulster University found the number of people reporting significant levels of depression and anxiety rose significantly after the government ordered people in Britain to stay at home due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Researchers found that on the day after the lockdown was announced, 38% of study participants reported significant depression and 36% reported significant anxiety. This compared with 16% reporting significant depression and 17% reporting significant anxiety the day before the announcement.
Hello Pure’s 5HTP+ supplement is carefully formulated to support the body and mind during challenging times. The tablets contain 50mg of active 5-Hydroxytryptophan 5-HTP, a naturally occurring substance made by the body which is converted into serotonin, and is also found in the seeds of the African plant Griffonia Simplicifolia. The 5-HTP+ supplement contains a concentrated botanical extract and is enhanced with Vitamin B6, a key nutrient known to contribute to the all-round health of the body. Each premium capsule is vegan and vegetarian friendly, wheat free, dairy free and soy free.
Hello Pure was founded in 2017 by entrepreneurs Emma Thackray and Kenny Goodman, and Dr. Arianna Di Stadio. The company blends science and nutrition to create its range of supplements, all of which are produced in the UK.
Dr. Arianna Di Stadio, neuroscientist and co-founder of Hello Pure, said: “The current pandemic and overexposure to bad news is increasing fear and anxiety in our population, with people becoming more and more worried about their health, how to protect themselves and their relatives. In addition, lockdown is impacting people’s work and consequently they are becoming concerned about their financial futures. Isolation and lack of human contact also both have a negative impact on hippocampus and expose people to heightened sadness and depression.
“Several drugs can be used for treating anxiety, but I really believe natural remedies are the best option in the situation we are currently facing, where anxiety is connected to a very stressful time and is not due to psychological or psychiatric disease. Oral supplementation doesn’t have the collateral effect of traditional anti-anxiety drugs and doesn’t create addiction. However, it’s important to note the effect of supplements is less powerful than a drug, so they need to be taken consistently for a longer period to obtain the same effect.
“Oral supplements are easily accessible for everyone and, although they cannot be used as the only treatment for severe forms of depression, their effectiveness has been confirmed by several studies on humans. Whilst they may not eliminate COVID-19 distress altogether, natural supplements have been proven to help people feel better and sleep well.”
