‘Key’ planning application submitted for SSI Steelworks site

A planning application has been submitted for a parcel of land at the former SSI Steelworks site in Redcar.

Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen has today submitted plans for the former industrial site that aim to ‘spearhead’ its redevelopment.

The plans will see a new roundabout and road access created for the 150-acre Grangetown Prairie site, as well as improvements to the existing Eston Road.

The news follows the Mayor’s appointment last month of Hartlepool-based Seymour Civil Engineering to start site clearance and preparation work at the Prairie site.

Mayor Houchen commented: “When we won the Compulsory Purchase Order inquiry, I said we wouldn’t be wasting any time and I meant it. In less than a month we’ve appointed a fantastic company from Hartlepool to begin crucial preparation work at the Prairie site and we’ve now submitted a key planning application to unlock the site.

“I’m putting the building blocks in place to deliver a brighter future for this site, a future that will see the creation of a world-class centre focused on the clean energy, offshore and innovation sectors.

“The redevelopment of the steelworks will create thousands of good quality, high skilled local jobs for local people, and the development of the Prairie site is a key first step in my plan in delivering these jobs.”
